They say don’t play with your food, but I reckon that’s precisely what we should be encouraging kids to do.

In my (humble) experience making food fun is without a doubt the best way to get them to eat anything, not only because it means they’re more likely to eat it but because you can sneak things in without them noticing.

5 fun weaning recipes for kids

We opted for baby led weaning with both BB and Little B and – assuming we don’t have too many heart-stopping stuck-in-the-throat-moments – we’re going to do the same with Littlest B.

She’s six months old now and after six months of exclusive breastfeeding it’s time to turn her into a weanager and start introducing solids.

I’m hoping the process might encourage BB and Little B to try some foods they’d otherwise turn their noses up at too, so we’ve teamed up with baby food brand Organix to bring you 5 fun weaning recipes for kids.

5 fun weaning recipes for kids

1. Bear porridge (suitable for 10 months+)

You will need:

2 tbsps strawberry and banana porridge (we used Organix)
5 tbsps milk of your choice (I use breast!)
2 round pieces of banana
3 blueberry halves

1. Place the porridge into a small bowl and add the milk. Stir well to combine then leave to thicken for a minute or two.
2. Gently place one of the banana slices on top of the porridge. Cut the other banana slice in half and add to the bowl for the bear’s ears.
3. Add two blueberry halves for the eyes.
4. Finish your fun food bowl with the remaining blueberry half for the nose and serve immediately.

2. Fruity mouse (suitable for 10 months+)

1 slice of peeled apple cut into 6 matchsticks
3 blueberry halves

1. Pour the fruit pot into a small bowl. Place one blueberry half on top of the puree for the nose.
2. Add three apple matchsticks on each side of the bowl for whiskers.
3. Add the remaining two blueberry halves for the eyes.
4. Finish your fun food bowl with two apple rice cakes for ears and serve!

You will need:

3 rice cakes (we used Organix apple flavor)
6 slices of banana
¼ kiwi fruit cut into shards
3 blueberry halves
3 raisins (we used Organix Goodies Raisins)

1. Place the kiwi fruit pieces on the plate in a curved line for grass. Add the three rice cakes to the plate above the kiwi ‘grass’
2. Top each rice cake with a slice of banana. Cut six ear shapes from the remaining three banana slices and add to the plate.
3. Cut each raisin in half and add two halves to each rice cake for the eyes.
4. Add blueberry halves for noses and serve immediately.

4. Space rocket (suitable for 10 months+)

5 fun weaning recipes for kids

You will need:

3 carrot puffs or sticks (we used Organix)
2 pieces of peeled cucumber – 1 round slice & 1 long slice cut into a triangle
1 slice of mental cheese cut into a moon and some stars
1 slice of red pepper

1. Place the three carrot sticks on a plate to form the body of the rocket. Add the cucumber triangle for the top of the rocket.
2. Make cuts into one edge of the red pepper slice to form flames then add to the bottom of the rocket.
3. Place the cucumber circle on top of the carrot sticks for the rocket window.
4. Add the cheese moon to the plate. Finish your fun food plate with a scatter of cheese stars.

5. Carrot sticks house (suitable for 10 months+)

5 fun weaning recipes for kids

You will need:

3 carrot puffs or sticks (we used Organix)
5 pieces of peeled cucumber cut into 4 small sticks & 1 rectangle
4 pieces of lightly steamed carrot cut into 1 rectangle, 1 sliver & 2 ‘V’ shapes

1. Place two of the cucumber sticks on a plate for the base of the house, then add two more cucumber sticks for the sides of the house.
2. Use a carrot stick to complete the square, then use two more carrot sticks to form the roof.
3. Cut one corner off the cucumber rectangle and add to the plate to form the chimney. Top with the sliver of carrot.
4. Add the rectangle of carrot for the door.
5. Finish your fun food plate with the ‘V’ shaped carrot for birds.

Are you in the throes of weaning? Or have you been there, done it and got the (splattered) t-shirt? If you have any other fun suggestions I’d love to hear them!
