Of course it was inevitable.

At five and a half years old and with the new baby due in a few weeks it was only a matter of time before BB asked The Question.

Mummy how did Daddy put a baby in your tummy?

I just didn’t expect it to be on crowded bus. Very loudly.

Yes people, she chose a full double decker bus on the school run to pop The Question: ‘Mummy how did Daddy put a baby in your tummy?’ Even the driver heard.

Needless to say it wasn’t just her looking at me expectantly for an answer.

So what did I do?

After a pregnant pause (excuse the pun) I copped out and said I’d tell her when we got home, and quickly changed the subject to a poetry competition she’s got coming up at school.

Of course I didn’t tell her when we got home, because she’d forgotten all about it thank goodness.

The question is, what’s the best way of tackling it? (Excuse the pun again, couldn’t resist!)

Tell the truth? Or fudge it?

Dr Google’s suggestions range from letting her watch One Born Every Minute (there’s the truth and then there’s the truth – I don’t want to give her nightmares) to a book called Mummy Laid An Egg, which sounds a tad misleading to me.

Either way I’d better get my thinking cap on, because she’s going to ask again at some stage. With a bit of luck it won’t be me next time.

Have you ever been asked The Question? What did you say?
