Wondering how to entertain the kids this Halloween in the absence of parties, trick or treating and all the usual fun and games that can’t happen in the wake of coronavirus?

With Halloween set to be a little different in 2020 and with so many events postponed and cancelled throughout the year I’m keen to make Halloween as fun as it can be for the kids, especially because we’re already a family of six so can’t do anything involving family and friends until the ‘rule of six’ is lifted.

The kids have been planning a stay at home ‘pumpkin party’ since the end of August and with Halloween falling at the end of half term this year that gives us plenty of time to make the most of the run up to the big day.

I’ve seen the idea of putting pumpkins in windows and on front doors for kids to spot instead of trick or treating, a bit like we did with rainbows earlier in the year, doing the rounds on social media, so when graphic designers Font Bundles got in touch and asked us to decorate our front door for Halloween using their free fonts I thought it would be a great way to put a smile on the kids’ faces and our neighbours at the same time.

They challenged us to transform our front door for Halloween with the help of a £20 Hobbycraft voucher by making signs and decorations using free fonts from Font Bundles.

Halloween front door decoration ideas for under £20

If you haven’t come across Font Bundles before they offer all sorts of fonts free, which you can download straight to your computer to help with everything from creating your own branding to crafts like decorating your front door for Halloween.

We started off by choosing three fonts to use to help decorate our front door – which was easier said than done as there are lots to choose from!

Downloading and installing them is easy – just follow the prompts that will pop up on your screen by clicking on the boxes and it’s all done for you. The fonts will magically appear as a text option at the top of your document in seconds. Then it’s time to get creative!

Halloween wreath

Wreaths aren’t just for Christmas these days, they’re for Easter, spring and summer so why not for Halloween too, especially as we’ll all be staying at home this year.

We started off making a ‘Happy Halloween’ sign to cheer up anyone coming to our front door using Font Bundles new Dangki Script, then built our design around that.

Hobbycraft has all sorts of bibs and bobs for seasonal wreath making including artificial ivy, potion bottles and orange slices.

After a bit of trial and error and a lot of playing around I armed myself with a glue gun and arranged everything together on a dried moss wreath I already had in the cupboard. This is the result – I’d love to know what you think!

Caution tape

The kids loved the idea of making our own caution tape and plastering the front door with it and Font Bundles has lots of seasonal designs to choose from.

We couldn’t resist this Midnight Show font with letters that look like ghosts, which we printed onto card in orange ink before sticking it onto black crepe tape with pompoms and googly eyes.

I don’t know about you but I do think there’s something charming about homemade decorations as opposed to shop bought ones!

Celebrating the moment

There’s no getting away from the fact we’ll be staying at home this Halloween so we decided to embrace it with a nod to the unprecedented situation we’re all in with our caution tape.

The hashtag #stayhomestaysafe is a popular and timely one so we made a section of caution tape using Font Bundles Blast font to help remind us of the importance of all doing our bit.

Because we live in a block of flats with an internal front door I’ve never really given it much thought at Halloween before, but I think you’ll agree it looks a lot more cheerful now than it did before!

And our little Hermione Granger is rather pleased with it too (if you have a look at my Instagram and Facebook stories you’ll see what I mean!)

Do you have any stay at home Halloween plans this year? Will you be decorating a window or door for Halloween? I’d love to know what you’ll be getting up to!
