Now here’s a sentence I never thought I’d write: things I’m going to miss about lockdown.

When we first went into lockdown I won’t lie: at eight months pregnant and with three kids suddenly at home I thought it was the end of the world, but fast forward three months and there’s actually quite a lot I’m going to miss about it!

miss about lockdown

I don’t mean staying up until silly o’clock trying to bag a Tesco home delivery slot or homeschooling, I mean little things like fish finger sandwiches and rainbows.

As lockdown measures are finally starting to ease I thought I’d look back on 10 things I’m going to miss about lockdown – and I’d love to know if you will too!

10 things I’m going to miss about lockdown

1. Not having to set the alarm

A newborn baby, a three-year-old, a five-year-old and an eight-year-old are natural alarm clocks but it’s been so nice not having to wake up to beeping and get straight out of bed. I didn’t miss that at all.

2. Not having to get up when you wake up

Getting woken by crying/squabbling/poking or someone shouting from the loo might not have changed but not having to get out of bed immediately to make sure everyone is out of the door on time was a big lockdown silver lining for me.

3. Being forced to stay at home

I know it sounds crazy but lockdown forced us to take our foot off the pedal and slow down, something that simply wouldn’t have happened otherwise. It also made me realise just how crazy bonkers our pre-coronavirus lives actually were what with work, school, nursery and after school clubs etcetera etcetera.

4. My friends

Again, it might sound bonkers what with lockdown measures easing but thanks to group Zoom chats throughout lockdown I’ve spoken to my friends more in the last six weeks than I have in the last six months. I really hope that when normal life resumes we can all still find the time to schedule a call at the same time – something that’s easier said than done.

5. Rainbows

They quickly became a symbol of hope in unprecedented times and they’re everywhere: gracing living room windows, painted on pebbles in the street and emblazoned across social media. The kids love spotting them when we go out and I’ll always associate rainbows with the time the world paused.

6. Gary Barlow’s Crooner Sessions

Have you seen them? If you haven’t then you must! Every day at 5 o’clock Gary uploads a ‘Crooner Session’ to his social media channels featuring him and another group or singer singing one of the said group or singer’s songs and on bad days it’s one of the things that’s helped get me through lockdown. Highlights include Rick Astley, KT Tunstall and most recently All Saints.

7. Fish finger sandwiches

They’ve been my go-to lunch throughout lockdown and I’m not the only one: fish finger sales have reportedly rocketed during lockdown! And while there’s absolutely no reason why I can’t eat them for lunch all the time, I know I just won’t have as much time to make them once ‘normal life’ resumes.

8. Our allotment

Usually somewhere we only went in the evening and at weekends, our allotment became a sanctuary during lockdown when we could only go out once a day and we’ve spent more time there in the last six weeks than we have in the six years we’ve had it. I really hope when all this is over we can find more time to spend there.

9. The beach

Again, lockdown coupled with fantastic weather has meant we’ve spent more time on the beach in front of our flat than we ever have before, and we’re all now rocking what we’re calling a ‘lockdown tan’!

10. Cakes!

The oldest has made some fab ones from her Great British Bake Off cook book during lockdown, including this cherry and almond bundt cake for Misery Guts’s birthday. And there’s no such thing as too much cake!
