With a newborn baby who I’m exclusively breastfeeding and with #2 back at school and #3 back at nursery I’m keen to do everything I can to support my immune system as we come out of lockdown this summer – which means supporting my microbiome as much as possible.

Looking after my microbiome with VSL#3

If you’ve never heard of your microbiome before – or you have but aren’t quite sure what it’s all about – your microbiome is made up of trillions of microorganisms found in the intestine, which help absorb nutrients from the food we eat and provide us with the energy we need for our day.

We all know that drinking lots of water, having a balanced diet and a good night’s sleep are the building bricks of good overall health – but that’s easier said than done with little people in the house, which is where VSL#3 comes in.

VSL#3 is a highly concentrated poly-biotic, delivering high levels of good bacteria across eight different strains to help maintain a healthy gut microbiome.

Each sachet contains 450 billion bacteria and each of the different strains has been specifically selected and then freeze-dried, so that they will survive the harsh conditions of the stomach. This allows them to reach and colonise the gut, where they help maintain a healthy digestive system.

You’ll need:

  • 1 banana
  • 1 tablespoon of oats
  • 2 handfuls of soft fruit (I used strawberries & blueberries)
  • 150ml milk
  • 1 spoonful of honey
  • 3 drops of vanilla essence
  • 1 packet of VSL#3

Method:

Roughly chop the banana
Put all the ingredients into a blender
Sprinkle in a sachet of VSL#3
Blend and serve!
