Breast milk for eye infectionFor the last week I’ve been sporting a black eye thanks to Little B who poked me right in the socket with a big fat chubby finger. As if that wasn’t bad enough (I’ve given up explaining how it happened, it sounds so lame and people look so sceptical) it now appears to be infected.

I’ve got no idea if the two things are related, but I do know the perfect, natural, magical remedy for an eye infection: breast milk eye drops.

I first made breast milk eye drops when I had an eye infection in 2013, and I’ve since used them to clear up Little B’s eyes when he had blocked tear ducts as a new born. It always works a treat and is so simple.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Express some milk into a sterilised cup or beaker which you can store in the fridge for up to 24 hours
  2. Either pour drops directly into the affected eye every 3 to 4 hours, or draw the milk up into a sterilised syringe (I use the one that comes with Calpol) and administer it that way
  3. Repeat until the itchiness or gumminess has disappeared and the eye is clear

Tip: if you’re trying to clear an eye infection in a baby, put milk on cotton wool pads to clean the area around the eye too.

Why it works remains a mystery: I guess it’s another one of breast milk’s magical secrets, like its antibodies and immune protection formula companies are still unable to replicate.

As before, my symptoms disappeared within 24 hours. Sadly, the black eye hasn’t disappeared, and will take a lot longer than 24 hours to clear up…
