Did you know there’s actual research into what your Christmas tree says about you?
Whether it’s real, whether it’s fake, whether you go for tinsel, or whether you don’t, whether you have coloured flashing lights or whether you go for warm white ones instead.
It occurred to me, as we dug out our decorations and put our tree up for another year (real, with white lights and no tinsel in case you were wondering) that a Christmas tree really does say a lot about a person – and a family.
What does your Christmas tree say about you?
It tells a story – about a past, about a future, about new arrivals, about people who have gone before and about people who are yet to come.
Like a couple who got engaged at a fairytale castle and hoped they would live happily ever after.
Of a glittery tree their firstborn made at nursery and proudly presented in chubby paint-stained hands.
Of orange glittery squirrels her mummy couldn’t resist even though they really are what her granny would call ‘gopping’.
Of the cheeky looking fox who came all the way from Macy’s in New York as a gift for the son they once thought they might never have.
Of Carol the chihuahua their daddy bought their mummy when she was heavily pregnant with baby number three at Christmas and discovered that being pregnant at Christmas really rather sucks.
Of the children who decorated the tree and the mummy who resisted the urge to ‘tweak’ their handiwork even though she was absolutely dying to space the decorations out.
And of the cats who can’t resist having a swipe when everyone else is sleeping leaving the angels looking a little worse for wear.
It turns out our tree says rather a lot about us – and I suspect we’re not the only ones.
